On Wednesday, March 11 2009, the final ceremony of the "Gospodarstvenik Primorske za leto 2008" took place in Nova Gorica.

Emerald , the world's leading publisher in the fields of management and technology, publishing over 200 professional journals, presents 11 different types of awards yearly. This year, the prestigeous Emerald Literati Network Award of Excellence 2009 was awarded to Gregor Kosec, young researcher, and his mentor, Prof. Dr. Božidar Šarler from the Laboratory for Multiphase Processes of the University of Nova Gorica.

Since January 2009, the research activities of the University of Nova Gorica, so far performed by four laboratories, three centres and the institute, have also been conducted by the newly opened Materials Research Laboratory.

In January 2009, the physicists of the University of Nova Gorica officially joined the international group of scientists VERSIM (VLF/ELF Remote Sensing of Ionospheres and Magnetospheres), devoted to studying the processes in the upper, charged layers of the Earth atmosphere – the ionosphere and the magnetosphere, by means of radio waves.

In November 2008, the Wine Research Centre at the University of Nova Gorica has been established and situated in Ajdovščina next to the School for Viticulture and Enology.

On January 14 2009, the senat of the University of Nova Gorica has confirmed the foundation of the new School of Arts of the University of Nova Gorica, which we prepared in cooperation with Famul Stuart School of Applied Arts from Ljubljana.

The "9th European Meeting on Environmental Chemistry - EMEC 9" took place in Girona, Spain from 4th to 7th December 2008. Our student of the graduate study programme Environmental Sciences of the University of Nova Gorica and a member of the Laboratory for Environmental Research at the University of Nova Gorica Mag. Malgorzata Piecha received "Award for the best oral presentation".

On Monday, November 24 2008, the awarding of the Zois Awards and Prizes, the Ambassador of Sciences Prizes and Puh Prizes took place at the Linhart hall at Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana.

The "Danube Rectors' Conference" took place in Budapest (Hungary), from 25th to 27th September 2008. The University of Nova Gorica took part in the conference as its new member, assuring to play a role in the process of adopting and realising future joint programmes.

In the 2008/2009 academic year the School of Humanities of the University of Nova Gorica will organise courses of the English, Italian, Spanish, French, German and Slovene languages.

From 23rd to 29th August 2008 the 46th International Fair of Agriculture and Food is taking place in Gornja Radgona, where the School of Viticulture and Enology of the University of Nova Gorica presents itself for the first time.

The "European Materials Research Society 2008 Spring Meeting" took place in Strasbourg, France from 26th to 30th May 2008. Our young researcher Andraž Petrović, a member of the Laboratory for epitaxy and nanostructures received a "Young Scientist Award".

The School of Applied Sciences of the University of Nova Gorica organizes guided visits to the Sinhrotron Elettra scientific centre near Trieste. The visits are designed for secondary school students who are particularly interested in physics.

On Wednesday, March 26 2008, the awarding of the "Jožef Stefan Golden Emblem Prize" took place at the Institute Jožef Stefan. The prizes are awarded to the Slovene and foreign authors of outstanding doctoral thesis in the fields of natural-mathematical, technical, medical, as well as biotechnical sciences.

From 15th to 20th March the THIRD EUROPEA WINE CHAMPIONSHIP took place in Santo Tirso, Portugal. Among the participants, aged between 17 and 25, were also two students of the School of Viticulture and Enology of the University of Nova Gorica.

Physicists from the Laboratory for astroparticle physics of the University of Nova Gorica, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Ljubljana, the Jožef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana and the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of the University of Maribor, who pursue their research of elementary particles within the Belle Collaboration, have together with their international colleagues published a paper on the differences between properties of matter and anti-matter in the most prominent scientific journal Nature (Belle Collaboration, Nature, 452, 332-335 (20 March 2008) | doi:10.1038/nature06827).
