Director of the graduate study program Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology of the Graduate school and a member of the Laboratory for environmental science at the University of Nova Gorica, Doc. Dr. Elsa Fabbretti participate in a research project whose main objective is to study the molecular mechanisms in sensory neurons leading to migraine in patients, why these neurons become hyperactive, and how we could stop their signaling in chronic pain conditions.

The Council of the Republic of Slovenia for Higher Education at its meeting on 17 March 2006, confirmed the application of Nova Gorica Polytechnic for a change of status to university, thus enabling the creation of a fourth Slovene university - University of Nova Gorica.

The University of Nova Gorica Award for best European student animation film on 7th International Animated Film Festival - Animateka went to authors Jasmiini Ottelin, Pinja Partanen in Elli Vuorinen from Turku Arts Academy for their movie Benigni, which is, as the student jury explained, "an intimate drama about loneliness, out of which an unusual and tragical relationship appears."

At the meeeting held on November 11-12, 2010 in Triest, the Governing Board of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), confirmed the founding of its branch in Nova Gorica.

University of Nova Gorica is part of the Consortium Committee that received Grant for the Erasmus Mundus Study Programme European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations. Cooperation between European and African institutions to teach and study migration begins in 2011.

»Solbiopolysy« is an innovative project, co-funded from the European community through the 6th framework programme. Six partners from four European countries (Slovenia, Greece, Portugal and Italy) participate in the consortium. Solbiopolysy seeks to advance the development of innovative and readily applicable technologies, based on the integration of landfill gas and solar energy, for the generation of electricity and, eventually, heating and cooling systems. The Solbiopolysy technology will be tested in a pilot plant located in Slovenia.

Under the slogan Educating community creating connections the School of Arts of University of Nova Gorica presents a new online platform of education, art and culture. The public platform joins into a community creatives of diverse fields of the arts and creative industries; photography, videofilm and animation as also new media.

Prof. Dr. Mladen Franko, from the University of Nova Gorica in co-authorship with prof. dr. Chieu D. Tran from Marquette University (Milwaukee, WI, USA) have contributed a chapter on „Thermal Lens Spectroscopy” to the Encyclopedia of Analytical Chemistry published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc..

The eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano on the 15 April 2010 and the subsequent spreading of volcanic ash caused considerable difficulties for air traffic over Europe. The air space has reopened, however, for scientists questions still remain: the exact altitude and trajectory of the ash cloud; the distribution of ash deposited on the ground; possible long-term effects on weather and climate.

The President of the University of Nova Gorica, Prof. Dr. Danilo Zavrtanik, has recently signed an agreement on mutual collaboration in the fields of education and scientific research with the President of the University of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Prof. Dr. Jean Kouldiati, and the President of the University of Koudougou (Burkina Faso), Prof. Dr. Bila Gerard Segdav.

A colleague of the University of Nova Gorica, Prof. Dr. Iztok Arčon, reported in a recently published article in a scientific review Environmental Pollution, with his colleagues from Agricultural Research Council-Research Group on Soil–Plant Systems, Gorizia, Italy (L. Leita, A. Margon, A. Pastrello, D. Mosetti) and from University of Udine (M. Contin), about the fate of ecotoxic hexavalent chromium in the environment.

The Town Council of the Municipality of Nova Gorica adopted a decision in May 2009, with which it allocated a lot for the needs of constructing a campus of the University of Nova Gorica. In the autumn of 2009, we have signed a letter of intent with the Municipality of Nova Gorica for the construction of a 16-hectare university campus, along the Korn stream in Nova Gorica.
