Language tools
Below is a selection of language tools conceptually designed, developed or co-created by members of the Center. These tools are intended to support not only academic work but also the needs of the broader community including educators, students, clinicians and all those interested in language, cognition and multilingualism.* Through open access to these materials, we seek to make linguistic research more usable, visible and beneficial beyond the university setting.
*The resources listed below are not certified clinical or medical tools and are not intended for clinical diagnosis, treatment, or decision-making about an individual.
JERA: A tool for assessing sentence comprehension in Slovene
JERA is the first sentence comprehension test developed for Slovene. It is based on a psycholinguistic sentence–picture verification task and enables the assessment of comprehension across different sentence types and levels of complexity. The test measures both response accuracy and response times, providing insight not only into comprehension performance but also into the temporal dynamics of sentence processing. It provides an individualized assessment of sentence comprehension ability based on comparison with normative data standardized on more than 500 neurotypical adult speakers of Slovene.
JERA is intended for researchers, speech-language professionals, educators and other specialists who require a reliable and structured instrument for evaluating language abilities at the cognitive level. Implemented as a stand-alone Windows application, the test is available for free download at jera.ung.si upon agreeing with the conditions of use.
JERA monograph
The monograph "JERA-JEzikovno RAzumevanje" [JERA-Language Comprehension] presents theoretical foundations, conceptual design, development and standardization of the JERA test. The monograph was published simultaneously in both print and electronic formats. The electronic version is available in open access under the terms of the Creative Commons 4.0 license.
SlovSTvo - testing
SLOVSTVO-testing is an online tool for evaluating language processing in Slovene. Unlike traditional proficiency tests, it uses specially designed C-test tasks in which parts of words are systematically omitted and participants reconstruct them from context. This format engages grammar, vocabulary, discourse understanding, predictive processing and working memory simultaneously, making it highly sensitive to how effectively a speaker processes language. SLOVSTVO-testing is a web-based tool valuable for researchers, clinicians, and practitioners working with diverse language users where standard tests often fall short.
MAIN - Slovene version
MAIN – Slovenian version is the Slovene adaptation of the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN), which is part of the LITMUS test battery and is intended for assessing narrative abilities in children acquiring one or more languages. MAIN is a theory-driven tool for assessing narrative comprehension and production in children acquiring one or more languages. The Slovenian version provides researchers, clinicians, and educators with a standardized resource for assessing narrative abilities in monolingual and multilingual contexts. Note: you need to fill out and submit the form at this link in order to be able to download the test.
Stroop test - Slovene version
The online Slovene version of the Stroop test is a short demonstration version that allows users to try out the basic logic of the task themselves and get a sense of the interference effect between the meaning of a word and the colour in which it is displayed. The test measures the speed and accuracy of responses to the colour of a word under conditions in which the meaning of the word may either match or conflict with its colour. At the end, users receive a short summary of response accuracy in congruent and incongruent conditions, together with an estimate of the temporal Stroop effect, i.e. the difference in response time between incongruent and congruent trials.
VIR – Language Exposure and Use questionnaire
The Language Exposure and Use Questionnaire (VIR) is a research tool for studying Slovene–Italian bilingualism, particularly in contexts where the use of the two languages varies across age periods and different social circumstances. VIR may also be used as a research tool for broader data collection on language exposure and use in bilingual speakers. The questionnaire is freely available under the terms of the Creative Commons CC BY-ND 4.0 licence.

BLP - versions for the Slovene–Italian language pair
The Bilingual Language Profile (BLP) is a widely used questionnaire for assessing language dominance in bilingual speakers, developed at the University of Texas, USA. At CCML, we have prepared two versions of the BLP questionnaire for the Slovene–Italian language pair. They are intended for researchers, educators and other users who need a structured tool for collecting data on the bilingual profile of speakers of Slovene and Italian.
