Content

Sport as a part of general culture can be followed in history through different periods and environments. Art, archaeological artefacts and linguistic heritage bear witness to its historicity, as some expressions, such as gymnastics, taken into modern languages. The roots of modern sport lead us from the Renaissance-humanistic and Enlightenment involvement of physical practices in pedagogical discourses to the integration of leisure games, physical exercise and the discovery of mountains or nature based on club organization. In the transition from late medieval society to modern society, sport was social innovation and adaptation to modernist changes. It became a ‘sui generis’ (self-sufficient) activity, a part of general culture and a mean of education and with events supported popular culture. As part of sports competitions, the Olympic Games were restored, taking over the ancient time pattern and becoming an element of sports-cultural modern uniformity, including the peculiarities and promotion of national environments, entities and countries.
Comparisons with the development in European countries will shed light on what is happening in the Slovenian area and in the immediate inter-neighbouring area, where activities were intertwined with various ideological and cultural patterns of Slovenians and other compatriots.

Intended learning outcomes

Through the study of phenomena and development, students learn and understand one of the social subsystems (sport), terminological changes and puzzles, and stereotypes related or similar to the wider environment. They will learn and understand the connectivity and contribution of the Slovenian space to the neighbouring and international space.
