Archivistics

The purpose of the course is to educate students to independet work and research in public archives and private archival institutions. Students get to know the structures of institutions, their development through history and their competence, different types of archival records and regulations governing the protection of archival cultural heritage.

Required is a basic, high school level knowledge of History.

The course focuses on two main issues:
- the first focus is on the development of archival sciences (from the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century) with an emphasis on administrations, judicial and ecclesiastical institutions, their competencies and reforms, and typical forms of archival records, which is their legacy (land registers, cadastral maps, documents, etc.);
- the second focus is on the development of archival sciences in the 20th and 21st centuries, with emphasis on the development and responsibilities of administrative, judicial, ecclesiastical and other bodies whose material is stored in archives,the basic forms of archival and current records, their origin and transfer to public archives, the legal basis (national and international) of their protection and the issue of its use (restrictions, protection of personal data - in particular, the protection of documents containing information on the patient's healthcare treatment classified information, GDPR). Contents address aspects of professional processing of archival records, material protection, preparation of various archival aids and digitization of archival documents and procedures as well as the transition of archive creators to hybrid and/or digital management.

Understanding of the history of institutions and archival science. Ability to independent work with archival records, research and knowledge of document interpretation. Ability to understand the classification of archival records and archival aids.

Ana Jenko Kovačič completed her first degree at the Department of Art History at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana in 2013. She continued her studies at the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, where she completed her MA in the Ancient History module in 2015. In 2022, she completed her PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences at the Department of History. She wrote her dissertation entitled The City and the Bishop in Istria in the Middle Ages under the supervision of Prof Peter Štih, PhD. Since 2021, she has been working as a researcher at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. She is also closely involved in the work of the International Centre for Comparative Historical Studies (ICCHS), which focuses on the mediaeval history of Istria and other topics related to auxiliary historical sciences and digital humanities. She has also conducted several foreign training courses in these fields.
