English Language 2

Students master the language and content of more complex texts in English. They strengthen their existing knowledge and improve their language skills at an advanced level, and prepare their seminar on a chosen topic. At the same time, during the study process, the students develop their more complex reading, writing and speaking skills, and a deeper understanding of the more complex themes and language in English.
The general objective of the course:
C1 level (according to CEFR, the Common European framework of reference for languages)

Secondary-school knowledge of general English equivalent to the level of the general matura/vocational matura examination in the English language. Knowledge acquired at the English 1 course is desirable.

English 2
Analysis and understanding of more complex texts in English.
Ways of thought expression, ways of expressing critical thinking and arguments.
More complex grammar (the process of aquiring more complex grammar and syntax structures; contrasting and comparing ideas and lines of thinking).
The process of more complex writing (theme, form, fluency, grammar accuracy, coherence).
The process of reading and understanding more complex themes (enriching one's conceptual and language understanding).
Certainties and uncertainties in thinking and language; explicit and implicit meaning.
Language in the academic context (academic English); conceptual terminology; research, paper.

Knowledge and understanding:
Knowledge and understanding of more complex themes written in English;
knowledge and understanding of more complex English syntax;
development of more complex reading, writing and speaking abilities (students prepare their continual study assignments and seminar);
a gradual development of thinking, language and conceptual terminology in the relevant field (humanities, other sciencies).

Examination

Milena Kovačević je diplomirala angleški jezik in književnost in komparativno književnost na Univerzi v Zagrebu; magistrirala na isti univerzi. Dobitnica rektorjeve nagrade Univerze v Zagrebu. V britanski kulturni diplomaciji (British Council Zagreb) strokovno izpopolnjevanje v Združenem Kraljevstvu. Redno zaposlena na Univerzi v Novi Gorici; predavanja o književnosti na univerzah v Franciji, Angliji, Italiji, Grčiji in na Danskem.

Milena Kovačević holds BA in English Language and Literature and Comparative Literature from the University of Zagreb, and MPhil from the same university. During her studies she was awarded the University of Zagreb Rector's award. In British cultural diplomacy (British Council Zagreb) professional development in the United Kingdom. She has been teaching English and has a full time employment at the University of Nova Gorica; some of her lectures on literature have been given at the universities in France, England, Italy, Greece and Denmark.

Veronika Piccinini, English language lecturer, holds a BA (Hons) in English Language in Literature. Since 2005, she has been working at the University of Nova Gorica, where she has been teaching ESP – English for Specific Purposes at various study programmes. She has also been teaching EAP – English for Academic Purposes as a branch of ESP as part of the courses Introduction into Project Work and Group Project at the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Nova Gorica.
She has gained her professional experience by teaching at various institutions on different levels of the educational system. She has received further professional training also in the U.K. and Austria (ECML – European Centre for Modern Languages, part of the European Council). She is particularly interested in the research of the methodology of teaching English as a foreign language, especially in creative language teaching. She has been presenting her work at conferences and published articles in Slovenia and abroad.
