Project day - 21 January 2020
Project Day of the School of Environmental Sciences – 21st January 2020
Upon the end of each semester, the School of Environmental Sciences of the University of Nova Gorica organises a Students’ Project Day, at which the undergraduate students of Environment present their environmental group projects.
The students start with project work already in their first year of studies, and carry on with the research activities on the chosen environmental topic in the second year. At the courses Introduction into Project Work and Group Project they learn how to reach for relevant literature, form hypotheses, define the appropriate methods for solving the research problem, the fundamentals of laboratory and field work and acquire team work skills. When preparing project reports, they practise their technical vocabulary and learn the rules related to citing and respecting the intellectual property. Since project work activities are carried out in the English language, the students also upgrade their specific vocabulary in English and develop their oral skills in a foreign language while presenting the outcomes at project days.
At the Students’ Project Day of 21st January 2020, the first-year students of Environment presented their initial findings of their project titled “Identification of environmental stress conditions by comparative analysis of peroxidase activity in Vipava and Ljubljana”, on which they began working at the beginning of the winter semester. The second-year students presented their interim report and findings of their group project “Objective and perceived environmental quality in the towns of Zenica and Maribor”. This project is of special interest also due to the fact that it deals with the chosen environmental topic in two countries – in Slovenia and in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The students can therefore acquire valuable experience in working and performing research in an international environment. In addition, we also hope that the final outcomes of the project will contribute to solving the environmental problem in both countries. The project groups are working under the supervision of mentors, Dr. Giulia Annovi and Prof. Dr. Ario De Marco, while the language and communication module is carried out by Veronika Piccinini, Lector of the English Language.
