Seminar "Intersection of artificial intelligence, sustainable infrastructure, and responsible governance" 6th July 2026
School of Engineering and Management Hosts Seminar on AI Infrastructure Governance and Sustainable Development
An international seminar brought together researchers from Europe and Latin America and opened a discussion on sustainable development, responsible artificial intelligence governance, and the future of digital infrastructure.
The seminar entitled “Governance of AI Infrastructure and Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development” was held at the School of Engineering and Management at the initiative of IRCAI-UNG (International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence at the University of Nova Gorica) and the OE4BW initiative. The guest lecturer was Prof. João Paulo Veiga from the AI Centre at the University of São Paulo (Brazil).
The seminar presented current research initiatives within the framework of EU–LAC cooperation (European Union – Latin America and the Caribbean), exploring the links between artificial intelligence, sustainable infrastructure, and the responsible governance of future technologies.
Prof. Veiga presented innovative approaches to assessing the environmental, regulatory, and geopolitical impacts of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing (AI/HPC) data centres. Particular emphasis was placed on the development of new governance frameworks addressing the impact of large-scale AI infrastructure on cities, urban sustainability, human rights, and digital sovereignty, as well as their connection to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The discussion following the lecture provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on current challenges in AI development, particularly in the areas of energy efficiency, sustainable use of digital infrastructure, regulation, and the need for international cooperation in shaping responsible and resilient AI ecosystems.
The event highlighted the importance of connecting research institutions, industry, and wider society in seeking solutions to the challenges brought about by the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
The School of Engineering and Management would like to thank Prof. João Paulo Veiga for his inspiring and insightful lecture, as well as all participants for their engagement and constructive discussion.
