The use of new media in digital humanities

Objectives and competences

Understanding the uses of new media in the digital humanities methodology. Understanding the basic principles of the language of the new media, with an emphasis on the transformations of literature within the new media. Ability to analyze communication in the new media and an appropriate use of the new media language for purposes of planning new forms of communication. Ability to conceptualize the analysis of large datasets in humanities and the ability to design the visual arguments in the digital humanities research. Knowledge of and understanding the relationship of the computer media towards the older technical media: photography, film and video, and an ability to reflect on the integration of traditional media into the new media communication. Understanding and consideration of an involvement of the new media in the wider field of information technologies, and of innovations in this field. Understanding the ways in which the new media are embedded in the changes in the field of representation and mixed reality.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of English and of at least another foreign language. Basic computer skills.

Content

This course is the foundation for researching the relationships between cultural practices as they are developed in the so-called new media. A special emphasis will be given to the relationships between literature and other media. For a contemporary approach to literature, art and culture, it is essential to consider the transformation of the world-model by means of the new forms of telecommunication, personal mobility and algorithmic data processing. The course will link the theory and practice in the domains of literary history and theory, digital humanities, semiotics, cultural studies, theories of visual language and new media theories.

Themes:
1. Digital humanities. Methods and examples.
2. Information technologies and the understanding of computer media.
3. Information design and data visualization. Analysis and visualization of large datasets. Techniques for visual argumentation.
4. Digital video and motion graphics. Making the video abstract for a scientific paper.
5. User interfaces for the web and mobile applications.
6. Virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality. Layering geo-locations with humanist information, designing literary itineraries and the user experience in mixed reality.
7. Concepts from the new media theory. Vilém Flusser and techno-imagination. Lev Manovich and cultural analytics. The question of the aesthetics of artificial intelligence.

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge of basic study literature, especially the key theoretical contributions, the key new media artworks, and the key examples of use of new media in digital humanities research. Knowledge of basic elements, procedures and principles of interactive communication in the new media. Knowledge of the software tools, formats and principles of assembly and composition of digitized image, sound, textual and other data material for the production of presentational applications. The ability to critically reflect on the new media forms of communication.
Understanding concepts such as: integrated media, hypertext and hypermedia, cyber-text, digital and analogous, databases, algorithms, artificial intelligence, neural networks, data visualization, information graphics, server, browser, interface, user experience, prototyping, internet textuality, interactivity, avatar, telepresence, telematics, gamification, mixed reality, virtual reality, augmented reality, social media.
