Path of Shame: Participatory Mapping of Representations of Shame in Literature (O6-60113; duration: 1.9.2026-30.11.2027)

In September 2026, the Research Centre for the Humanities at the University of Nova Gorica launched a new ARIS project entitled Path of Shame: Participatory Mapping of Representations of Shame in Literature, led by Dr Ivana Zajc. The following researchers are participating in the project: dr. Katja Mihurko, dr. Leonora Flis in Emilija Vućićević. Drawing on the principles of citizen science, the project actively involves members of the wider public in literary research.
The central aim of the project is to explore, together with citizen scientists, how shame and the social, cultural, and spatial experiences associated with it are represented in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Slovene literature. Particular attention will be devoted to Gorizia and Nova Gorica and to themes connected with local history, language, and culture. Through a series of workshops, participants and researchers will jointly identify relevant themes, collect literary excerpts, and develop a participatory system for annotating the selected texts.
The collected material will be enriched with bibliographic and spatial information and entered into the open-access digital database of the Research Center for Humanities, Emotions. The data will contribute to the creation of an interactive Map of Shame, visualising spatial patterns and connections between literary representations of shame.
