Hyperspacing the Verb: The interplay between prosody, morphology and semantics in the Western South Slavic verbal domain
The project aims to answer core questions of semantics, morphology and phonology by investigating their rich interactions in the (de)verbal domain in Western South Slavic (WSS: Slovenian and Serbo-Croatian). The initial observation is that in WSS, prosodic patterns abundantly act as markers of different dimensions of structural relatedness (Marvin 2003, Simonović & Arsenijević 2014). Three dimensions: morphological relatedness (the continuum between inflection and derivation), semantic relatedness (transparency vs. idiosyncrasy) and prosodic faithfulness (to the base, to an affix or a default) display systematic correlation. Testing this trend against a large corpus of data constitutes the core of our research. While our agenda is novel, the observed interplay of factors is a perfect testing ground for a range of long established linguistic questions, such as:
- How are verbs represented? Where does the information on prosody, theme vowels and different bases reside?
- Are the observed interdependencies (prosody-semantics-morphology) better analysed in a lexicalist (e.g. Optimal Paradigms, McCarthy 2005) or in a non-lexicalist approach (e.g. Distributed Morphology, Halle & Marantz 1993)?
- Is prosodic prominence of derivational affixes specified in the lexicon or structurally assigned?
- What is an adequate representation for verbal aspect?
- How do category-mixing morphological operations (forming participles, nominalisations) map on the continuum between prototypical inflection and derivation?
- How are loan verbs morphologically incorporated?
- Are homonymous affixes (WSS: -je, -en, -n, -l) better analysed as the same suffix and what are the theoretical consequences of this move?
Systematic interactions between prosody, morphology and semantics have only been scarcely investigated (e.g. De Belder et al. 2014, Lowenstamm 2015) and typically on languages such as English and Dutch, in which prosodic contrast is the result of the cyclic application of the stress rule rather than of lexical stress. In WSS lexical stress and pitch-accent systems, a much richer set of regularities surfaces much more visibly, enabling unprecedented insights into the interface. This is the first research to use these highly potent insights as a window into a wide range of general and specific issues in the interfaced domains, from prosody assignment or category change, to the lexicalism debate or the status of paradigms. It is particularly innovative that we explore minimal pairs for multipurpose affixes, barely noticed in the literature and amply attested in WSS.
Our research is based on standard methods (innovated where insufficient): the access to the empirical data is through corpus methods, while modelling tools of Optimality Theory, Formal Semantics and Distributed Morphology are used for analytic and explanatory purposes. To the best of our knowledge this is the first research that applies these methods to a data set which comprises a whole categorial class (WSS verb morphology).
