University of Nova Gorica invites to the public lecture Muscles Talk. Who is Listening? How human-machine interfaces eavesdrop on electrical activity of skeletal muscles and decode movement by Prof. Dr. Aleš Holobar (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Maribor).

Lecture will take place on Thursday, 3 December 2026, at 5 p.m. at the the Lanthieri mansion in Vipava.

ABSTRACT:
The human brain controls the function of skeletal muscles through complex electrical codes, thereby driving our movement, expression, and engagement. Although we intensively learn these codes from early childhood, we remain largely unaware of their deeper significance and often fail to interpret the warning signs they convey. What exactly are skeletal muscles communicating to us and our surroundings, and what are we already capable of deciphering from them? How will this impact our communication, habits, skills, and the development of society as a whole? Furthermore, how will this co-shape the future of natural and artificial intelligence? This popular science lecture will provide an overview of the state of the art and future directions in advanced human-machine interfaces that enable the non-invasive reading and interpretation of both conscious and unconscious electrical signals emitted by the human body.

Lecture will be in English.

You are cordially invited.
