ASTRONOMY EVENING WITH A LECTURE AND NIGHT-SKY OBSERVATION
18:00 Lecture: Stars — what they are, how they form, and how they die
Lecturer: dr. Andreja Gomboc
Stars are born and evolve on timescales that are much longer than human lifetimes. However, the final stages in the lives of some stars can unfold very quickly. A massive star can explode in only a few seconds. A black hole, such as the one hidden at the center of our Galaxy, can tear apart a star in less than one hour. Such events, which we currently cannot predict and cannot observe with the naked eye, are detected by modern telescopes. The most powerful survey of the night sky is the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) project, which began this summer at the Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile, and in which researchers from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Center for Astrophysics and Cosmology of the University of Nova Gorica also participate.
