Tiny Particles in the Air with World-Wide Health Impacts
University of Nova Gorica invites to the public lecture Tiny Particles in the Air with World-Wide Health Impacts by prof. dr. André S. H. Prévôt (Paul Scherrer Institute).
Lecture will take place on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, at 4 p.m. at the the Lanthieri mansion in Vipava.
ABSTRACT:
Atmospheric particulate matter spans a broad size distribution, ranging from a few nanometers to over 10 micrometers—the upper threshold for efficient penetration into the human respiratory system. In urban centers, particularly megacities, high concentrations of particulate mass significantly reduce life expectancy. While air quality has begun to improve in many regions worldwide, advanced research methodologies have revolutionized our understanding of emission sources, atmospheric processing, new particle formation, and subsequent health impacts, though key questions remain. This presentation highlights these innovative methods and their applications across China, India, Europe, and the Western Balkans. Ultimately, the lessons learned from these diverse regions outline critical pathways for future air pollution abatement strategies.
