Content
i) Introduction to tensors
ii) Theory of elasticity. Kinematics of a continuum, strain tensor, stress tensor, contact forces, Cauchy equations. Hooke law, Isotropic linearly elastic solid, Navier's Equations, elastic theory of crystals.
Applications to plates and rods. Elastic waves.
iii) Fluid dynamics. Continuity equation, Euler equation, Reynolds transport theorem, hydrostatics, convection; flow lines, Bernoulli equation; circulation, Kelvin theorem; Compressible and incompressible fluids, potential flow of an incompressible fluid, d'Alambert paradox; Newtonian Fluids. Navier-Stokes equations. Viscous fluids.
Reynolds number. Prandtl theory. Hydrodynamic instabilities. Turbulence.
Intended learning outcomes
Students will learn:

Knowledge and understanding of the basis of continuum mechanics;

Capacity to use the knowledge in a number of scientific and technological problems;

Fexibility and rapid adaptation at solving a spectra of continuum mechanics problems;
