Objectives and competences

  • knowledge of main observation techniques of astrophysical objects

Prerequisites

Enrollment into the current study year. For the exchange students, meeting of the course prerequisites will be checked by the Study committee of the school.

Content

  • Orientation, spherical trigonometry, daily and yearly changes of the sky, apparent motion of the Sun, Moon, planets
  • Parallax, nutation and precession of Earth, proper motion, atmospheric refraction
  • Telescope characteristics
  • Modern telescopes and observatories: basic properties and limitations,
  • Telescopes for different wavelengths
  • Astronomical instruments, basic photometric and spectroscopic observations, processing and analysis of images
  • Astronomical catalogs,
  • Observational work (image processing, astrometry, calibration, analysis of results)

Intended learning outcomes

Študenti bodo osvojili pojme in koncepte:
- sferna trigonometrija
- tehnike opazovanja z optičnimi teleskopi
- osnove fotometrije, spektrometrije in obdelave slik
- uporabo astronomskih baz podatkov Students will learn:
- spherical trigonometry,
- observational techniques for optical telescopes
- basics of photometry, spectrometry and image processing
- the use of astronomical databases
