Objectives and competences

During the course, the students will get acquainted with the appearance of the phenomenon of the literature for young readers, with the importance of knowing this kind of literature, its development and characteristics. Through reading and texts, they learn about the fundamental works of world and Slovenian youth literature. The examination of texts is complemented by a discussion of special themes and forms of youth literature. At the same time, students will get acquainted and will learn to use contemporary, multidisciplinary theories which can reflect the Slovenian and foreign children’s literature.

Prerequisites

There are no enrolment or degree requirements for the course.

Content

A survey on children's literature:
1. Literature for young readers in ancient periods of Slovenian literature (Krelj, Bohorič; Dev, Vodnik) and it's function.
2. Development of the children's literature until the Second Wold War (Levstik, Kette, Gradnik, Kosovel), the reception of foreign children's literature in Slovenia.
3. Development of children's literature after the Second Wold War :
- the social fiction and the appearance of detective novel (Jurca; Dolinar, Suhodolčan);
- development of the poetry;
- Astrid Lindgren's Pipi Longstockings;
- Ela Peroci's work;
- Svetlana Makarovič's work;
- Niko Grafenauer's work;
- Other authors (Zupan, Zupančič, Kovačič, Snoj, Zajc, Košuta, Dekleva, B. A. Novak, Štampe-Žmavc, Rozman, Muck, Vidmar etc.);
- Survey of magazines for children;
- Survey of puppet theatre, radio drama and drama;
- Survey of comics (Muster, Manček);
- Survey of genres of children's literature (adventure, detective stories, girls fiction etc.);
- Survey of translations of children’s literature (authors, main themes).

Special themes of the course:
- Contemporary and traditional Fairy tales (Magajna, Lainšček, Štefan);
- Picture-books: text and illustration (Zajc, Osojnik, Praprotnik-Zupančič);
- Sonority and rhythm in children's poetry (Snoj, Dekleva);
- Best-sellers (characteristics);
- Fear in the children's literature (Orlev, Haugen, Zupančič, Suhodolčan),
- Image of the child in the children's literature from its beginnings to contemporary authors (traditional Slovenian poetry, B.A. Novak, A. Rozman – Roza),
- Role of translator and translation in the international character of children's literature,
- Position of children's literature in literary field.

Intended learning outcomes

Students get acquainted with the children’s literature as a literature defined by its specific receptor and by the way the adults understand it. They understand fundamental concepts related with the children’s literature, its historic development and different ways of its existence, and also the role of children's literature in the literary field and in the culture socialization. They get acquainted and are capable of independent evaluation of principal authors, their works and principal critical reflection of their work. They also get acquainted with the specific characteristic of literary genres of children’s literature (traditional and contemporary fairy tales, picture-books, poetry, radio drama) and are capable reflect them independently. They are capable of autonomous discussion, search of literature and investigation work. They prove it by writing an essay and the final exam of the course.

Assessment

Written exam 80 %.

Positively evaluated essay in participation in tutorial are requested to be admitted to the exam 20 %.

Lecturer's references

Barbara Pregelj is an adjunct professor of literature at the University of Nova Gorica. She mainly researches various aspects of the reception of Spanish literature in Slovene literature, translation issues, youth literature and literary interpretation, and has designed and led a number of international and domestic projects in the field of motivation to read.
She regularly actively participates in congresses, symposia, round tables, lectures at home and abroad, and has also organized several visits by foreign authors to Slovenia and literary symposia. She also works as a translator and editor.
