Objectives and competences

The objectives of the subject are as follows:

  • to get acquainted with the role of literature in the development of sustainable tourism,
  • evaluate the role of literature in shaping spaces, identities, and destinations,
  • analyze the potential of different literatures for literary tourism,
  • analyze literary texts and connect them to tourism.

One of the main goals of the course is to enhance the applicability of knowledge about literature and provide students with the opportunity to acquire skills useful in various employment fields that require interdisciplinary knowledge.

There are no enrolment or degree requirements for the course.

Content

Literature can play a crucial role in tourism, representing a significant element of the cultural heritage of a destination. Literary works narrate stories about the place, customs, and history, attracting visitors and enabling a better understanding and connection with the destination. Through literature, tourists experience the destination in a deeper and more personal way, enhancing the overall tourist appeal. Additionally, literature can serve as an excellent tool for destination branding.

The course encompasses the following areas of communicating literature in tourism:
- tourism and the role of literature in it;
- potential of various literatures for literary tourism,
- exploring literature for literary tourism;
- travel writing and narratives in travel literature;
- stories in tourism;
- text analysis for literary tourism;
- forms of literary tourism, connections with film and heritage;
- literary tourism as a sustainable and inclusive practice through online guided tours;
- forms of literary tourism and connections with film and heritage tourism;
- examples of literary tourist destinations.

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

  • understanding the role of literary texts in tourism,
  • analyzing literary texts in connection with tourism and space,
  • analyzing a literary text and placing it within the tourist discourse.

Skills:

  • the ability to recognize, evaluate, and analyze literary texts for inclusion in tourism,
  • the capability of applying evaluation to literary texts,
  • the ability to creatively contribute to tourist discourse and sustainable tourism practices.

Lecturer's references

Dr. Jasna Potočnik Topler is an associate professor and English language lector. Her field of research spans across multiple disciplines, encompassing tourism, cultural tourism and its subtypes, tourism communication, and education. She is the author of several monographs, scientific articles, conference lectures, and an editorial board member of many journals, in addition to delivering guest lectures at foreign universities (such as Plymouth, Udine, Perugia, and Zagreb). She has been engaged in several international projects (as coordinator or partner), projects with the local community and students.
