Language and literature in the digital world
Objectives and competences
The main purpose of this course is to provide the linguistic and cultural knowledge of the Friulian language, which should enable active oral communication, reading and understanding of literary and other texts as well as professional knowledge about the culture of the adjacent nation.
The course should enable a student to, independently analyze the potential elements of Friulian origin within the Slovene language.
Prerequisites
There are no enrolment or degree requirements for the course.
Content
The course provides a balance between professional and pragmatic knowledge. The introductory part aims to give the student a general knowledge of the history of the Friulian language, and, above all through language exercises also a certain competence in the area of Friulian grammar. Teaching the basics of the language is based on the use and analysis of texts as the main starting point of the learning process, which should enable the student to actively communicate in the Friulian language.
• Linguistic image of Friuli: the presence of languages of Romance, Slavic and German origin.
• The standard language and dialects: the relationship between linguistic genres
• Standard Friulian
• Friulian literature (up to three fundamental Friulian literary works each year).
• Review of other literary genres (journalism), folk literature and oral tradition.
• Friulian culture.
Intended learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding:
● The student learns the basics of the Friulian language and understands its basic patterns;
● they learn about chapters of Friulian literature and culture;
● they learn about the history of the Friuli.
Acquired skills:
● The student is able to communicate in basic oral and written form in the Friulian language that can be used in contact with a Friulian speaker;
● They understand the history of the area and the sociolinguistic position of the Friulian people, which they will be able to use when dissecting the concrete social and cultural-historical phenomena of the Friulian language and its laws, learn about the chapters on Friulian literature and culture.

Assessment
Successful completion of the 2 colloquia during the year and the seminar paper are prerequisites for admission to the examination.

Lecturer's references
Danila Zuljan Kumar is associate professor of linguistics at the School of Humanities of the University of Nova Gorica and a research associate at ZRC SAZU's Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language. Her research topics include Slovene dialectology, sociolinguistics and geolinguistics. She is the co-author of Slovene Linguistic Atlases 1, 2, and 3, author of two and co-editor of several scientific monographs.

Dr. Giorgio Cadorini was born in Palmanova in 1965 and has been living in the Czech Republic since 1991. He studied general and Romance linguistics in Trieste and learned the Slovene language there. He received his doctorate in Prague. He is a member of the Prague Linguistic Circle. He taught Friulian, Italian, Romanistics and Mediterranean cultures at the Czech universities in Prague, Opava and Brno for thirty years. He deals with the etymology of Romance languages and is currently working on the international project Dictionnaire étymologique roman (DÉRom) and the lexicographic projects Dizionari de Lenghe furlane and Vocabular dl ladin leterar (Dizionari de Lenghe furlane, Vocabular dl ladin leterar). In 2010, 2011 and 2018, he lectured on the Friuli language, literature and culture course at the University of Nova Gorica.
