Language and literature in the digital world
Objectives and competences
The main goal of the course is to provide students with an overview of the development of Slovene and world drama and to place it in relation to European literary trends and to acquaint them with the basic form and content characteristics of Slovene drama in historical perspective and to train them for independent analysis and interpretation of drama. The course also aims to train students to understand the development of new approaches in drama research in digital humanities.
Competences: students expand and deepen their knowledge of the history and theory of drama and become acquainted with new approaches in the research of drama that have emerged in the digital age. They are able to argue the advantages of individual methods and approaches, to connect their similarities and differences.
Prerequisites
There are no enrolment or degree requirements for the course.
Content
Basic concepts and concepts in drama theory.
Literary-historical review of Slovene drama from the beginnings to the present: periods and literary currents.
Genre section of Slovenian drama.
Slovenian drama and the European dramatic context.
Interpretation of a dramatic text.
Typology of Slovene drama: bourgeois drama, historical drama, poetic drama, political drama.
Digital approaches in the interpretation of drama.
Intended learning outcomes
Students master basic literary-historical concepts related to drama. They are able to problematically deal with literary periods, directions, currents and other literary phenomena and to think critically about the relationship between these phenomena.
The student is acquainted with the new approaches that have been developed in the field of digital humanities in connection with the research of drama.

Lecturer's references
Assistant professor Dr. Ivana Zajc deals with digital humanities, especially with distant reading of literary texts, and with literary theoretical questions. She researches Slovene literary history from the point of view of the work of women writers and the history of emotions. She is the author of the scientific monograpf What is literary competence and how we test it with the matura essay. Her scientific articles have been published in many Slovene and foreign journals.
