Statistics

This course is part of the programme
Language and literature in the digital world

Objectives and competences

The main objective is to equip the student with the basic statistical tools used in linguistics and humanities more generally. The student should be prepared to perform statistical tests on empirical data tests on his own using R.

Prerequisites

The course does not require any special skills or knowledge, not covered by previous education of a future linguist. All that is needed is basic knowledge of computer use and reasonable command of English language.

Content

The introductory part of the course will focus on basic descriptive statistical methods. Students will learn the basic concepts of database organisation and the different characters of variables, their meaning and implications. Descriptive methods will cover both computational and graphical treatments of data. Descriptive methods will include analyses of frequency distributions and measures of mean and dispersion. Students will then be introduced to the importance of samples and sampling in statistical analysis. In particular, the importance of sample parameter estimation and the process of inference from a sample to a population will be highlighted. Particular attention will be paid to approaches to hypothesis testing.
The second part of the course will be devoted to the simultaneous analysis of two or more variables. Students will learn to use the R software tool on real linguistic data. All commonly used statistical methods will be discussed and exercises will be used to process real data up to the visualisation of the results.

Intended learning outcomes

Students learn how to use a modern tool for statistical analysis. They understand what statistics is about and how it gets to the answer. They know how to prepare the data for statistical analysis, they know how to visualize the data and the results of statistical analyses.

Readings

  • B. Winter. Statistics for Linguists: An Introduction Using R. Routledge 2020.
  • A. Ferligoj, Osnove statistike. Samozaložba, Ljubljana 1995.

Assessment

A term paper whose core part is a statistical analysis (80 %), oral presentation of the term paper (20 %).
