History of Slovenian

The main objective of this course is to familiarize students with the history of Slovenian from the 16th to the 20th century as well as with the various (sociolinguistic, social and historical) factors that influenced its development. A second objective is to train students to be able read and understand texts produced in any of the periods of the evolution of Slovenian.

There are no special prerequisites for enrolment.

The course introduces the students to the history of Slovenian from the 16th to the 20th century. It outlines the methodology and the basic linguistic and sociolinguistic concepts of the research of Standard Slovenian. Individual periods are explored against the background of their social and historical characteristics, of an analysis of text authors and text addressees, of the role of Slovenian in public life, of language planning, and of the evolution of the writing system, the vocabulary, and register and style variation. Students are also introduced to the basic Slovenian language manuals and different views of language in Slovenian linguistic discourse, as well as to the core aspects of the evolution of Slovenian phonology, morphology and syntax.

Students will possess knowledge of the basics of the history of the Slovenian language, of historical sociolinguistics and of the history of linguistics in Slovenia.

Prof. Janoš Ježovnik is the deputy head of the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language and head of the Institute's Lexicological Section. His research focuses on Slovenian dialects of western Beneška Slovenija (Slavia Veneta) and Resia, especially from the point of view of phonology and accentology, as well as language contact and language shift.
