Transcending binaries. Exploring dynamic processes of identification of historical subjects in the Alps-Adriatic Region

University of Nova Gorica, Vipavska 13 (Kompas), P8, 10.00

Abstract
The starting point for the research project Discourses and Practices of the In-Between in the Alps-Adriatic Region: Klagenfurt, Ljubljana and Trieste 1815–1914 is the observation that the history of the Alps-Adriatic region is still often told through the lens of nation states. This perspective emphasises national conflicts and ethnic differences, while the complex transregional interrelationships are often ignored. The project aims to contribute to reconstructing the history of the region as a space of ambiguities and overlaps and to highlight the repercussions of these historical dynamics. In doing so, we examine the situational practices and actions of historical subjects, based on discourses (such as contemporary ethnographies and travelogues) and practices (such as diary entries, letters and association activities). The focus is on the ruptures, difficulties and contradictions of these processes, which were characterised by diverse negotiations. In my presentation, I will highlight the dynamic aspects of spatial and cultural localisation and identification.
