5th GoChile Summer School of Astronomy

Are you a secondary school student interested in the workings of the universe? Astronomy? Astrophysics? Would you like to observe and search the skies with a professional telescope? Would you like to learn more about space, nature, science, and research activities? Would you like to hang out with like-minded students, interested in the same things as you?

Apply to the 5th GoChile Summer School of Astronomy organized by The School of Science of The University of Nova Gorica. It will take place at the youth cultural centre Hiša mladih Ajdovščina and at The School of Science in Ajdovščina from the 11th to the 18th of July 2026.

The GoChile Summer School is intended for secondary school students who are enrolled in any school for the academic year 2025/26. This includes all secondary and vocational schools.

If you want to apply, fill out the application form before the 20th of April 2026.

The data is intended only for the selection of participants for the 5th GoChile Summer School and will be confidentially kept until the final selection. We will not share the data with anyone.

Participants will carry out astronomical observation projects using the GoChile telescope, which is a remotely controlled telescope in Chile. In smaller groups of two students you will plan, carry out, and present your astronomical research project with the help of a mentor. At afternoon classes lead by researchers in the astrophysics field you will broaden your theoretical knowledge of various topics from the use of artificial intelligence in astronomy to the evolution of stars, black holes, and cosmic particles. You will hone your practical skills with telescopes set up in the vicinity of the youth cultural centre Hiša mladih in Ajdovščina.

The number of participants is limited to 16 students. If there will be more applications, there will be a selection process based on the answers on the application form. We will inform the participants of the results of the selection process a week after the application deadline, at the very latest. This year's Summer School will be international.

The Summer School will consider prior knowledge of the participants, but beginners are also welcome. The official languages of the programme are Slovenian and English. Basic knowledge of English is desirable.

The Summer School (the programme, accommodation, and meals) is free of charge for the participants. Participants will have to arrange the transport to Ajdovščina themselves.

The Summer School is organized by The School of Science of The University of Nova Gorica in collaboration with Zavod Cosmolab. Students will be mentored by prof. dr. Andreja Gomboc, doc. dr. Tanja Petrushevska, Andrej Guštin, mag. Eduardo Concepcion Castro.
