Phraseology

The main goal of this course is to educate the students with respect to the core principles of phraseology and its proper placement within linguistics. Students are taught to discern phraseology from other subfields (lexicology, syntax, text linguistics) through the study of properties of individual phraseological units. They should be familiar with the typology of various phraseological units (nominal, adjectival, verbal, adverbal, pragmatic idiom etc.) With the aim of educating the students in the basics of lexicography, they learn about the ways phraseology can enter dictionaries and the ways it is presented there.

No special prerequisits. This course is related to other linguistic courses of this program.

Students know the basics of phraseology. They understand what is the subject of phraseology and are able to tell it apart form other linguistic subfields. Students know how to use the phraseological typology and other acquired knowledge in independent lexicographical work.

Written exam (50%), homeworks (30%), short quizzes (20%). In order to pass, students need passing grade in both the final exam and in quizzes and homeworks.

Prof. Dr. Franc Marušič is a lecturer in linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Postgraduate Studies at the University of Nova Gorica. His main research areas are syntax, sociolinguistics and language counselling.
