Objectives and competences

The aim of the course is to introduce students to interesting linguistic topics, to acquaint them with the latest achievements of linguistic theory and current trends in linguistics. Students learn to search for relevant literature, how to read it and critically analyze and evaluate it.

Prerequisites

To join the subject and for successful completion of this course, students need to be familiar with the contents of all mandatory linguistic courses of the first year of the Language and literature in the digital world program (or equivalent).

Content

The course does not have a predetermined content, as the content will change from year to year. Within the course, students will be presented with several linguistic topics and related achievements in linguistics. Students will decide on one of the given topics and research it while being guided by the lecturer using literature review and guided debates.

Literature is determined based on the selected linguistic related topic.

Intended learning outcomes

Based on the reviewed literature and guided debates, the students will gain insight into various linguistic phenomena and how they are treated in different approaches. Students will acquire critical reading skills and learn to evaluate linguistic literature.

Assessment

Active participation in the course. Home assignments and final term paper. To obtain a passing grade for the course, the student must receive a passing grade on all individual components of the grade. The grade: 70% term paper, 30% homework.

Lecturer's references

Asst. Prof. Petra Mišmaš has a BA in Slovene Studies and a PhD in Cognitive Science of Language (both from the University of Nova Gorica). She primarily works on syntax and morphosyntax of South Slavic languages, but also works on language consulting and regularly publishes in Slovenian and international publications.
