Joining a selected research

This course is part of the programme
Language and literature in the digital world

Objectives and competences

The basic aim of the course is to familiarize the student with linguistic research work. Students acquire knowledge about obtaining data (e.g., working with informants), searching for and analyzing linguistically interesting topics and problems.
At the same time, students become familiar with the documentation of linguistic data, with the recognition of relevant research topics and the formulation of a research question, critical thinking, and various methods of linguistic work. They gain experience with written and oral presentation of their work or by presenting data and results in accordance with the standards in the field.

Prerequisites

To join the subject and for successful completion of this course, students need to be familiar with the contents of all mandatory linguistic courses of the first two years of the Language and literature in the digital world program (or equivalent).
The maximum number of students allowed for this course is 5.

Content

As part of the course, students join a linguistic research/project that takes place during the course. By joining such research, they become familiar with working with basic linguistic literature related to the research, finding a research question, choosing a method, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting results (written and oral report on their research work).
Under the guidance, the students do a case study of a phenomena, in the center of the research they have joined. They collect data, prepare a proposal of an analysis, and prepare a written and oral report of their work.

In doing so, they will get to know standards in content and design of research work and in mastering the skills necessary to carry out the steps of independent linguistic research work, from identifying a relevant topic, choosing a method, conducting research and reporting on the research.

Assessment

Active participation in the course. Home assignments, final term paper and in-class presentation of own work. To obtain a passing grade for the course, the student must receive a passing grade on all individual components of the grade.
The grade: 60% term paper, 20% term-paper oral presentation, 20% home assignments.
