Lexicography

Students will be introduced to the dictionary compilation procedures, current trends in lexicography, and available corpora for Slovenian. They will develop the skills to interpret data from dictionary and corpus sources, critically evaluate them, and utilize them to address linguistic inquiries.

No special prerequisites for enrolment. The course is related to all other linguistic courses in this program, but it does not assume background stemming from these courses.

In this course, students will explore the typology of dictionaries and the historical evolution of lexicography, both within Slovenia and internationally. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the significance of lexicography within linguistics and its broader societal implications. We will delve into the methodologies employed in modern dictionary production, utilize available corpus resources, and analyze the unique characteristics of various dictionary types. Special focus will be given to monolingual explanatory dictionaries, the use of dictionary metalanguage, typologies of dictionary definitions, interlexemic relations, and other pertinent dictionary data.

The students will learn the procedures involved in dictionary compilation, the principles of crafting dictionary definitions, and the selection of appropriate illustrative material and other relevant dictionary data. They will gain insight into various dictionary concepts and their corresponding conceptual features, enabling them to effectively utilize dictionary resources and approach them critically.

Asst. prof. Boris Kern is a research associate at the Fran Ramovš Institute of Slovenian Language of the ZRC SAZU. He researches questions of modern lexicology, morphology, semantics, language and gender and Slovenian as a second and foreign language. He is the co-author and/or co-editor of eSSKJ: Slovar slovenskega knjižnega jezika 2nd edition of the dictionary Slovar slovenskega knjižnega jezika, Slovar novejšega besedja slovenskega jezika, and ePravopis.
