Objectives and competences

The main aim of the course is to introduce students to the development and basic areas of sociolinguis-tics as a recent interdisciplinary linguistic science, as well as to the achievements and open questions of Slovene sociolinguistics. The presentation of meth-odological approaches and techniques is intended as an introduction to independent research work.

There are no special prerequisites for enrolment.

Content

The course will introduce students to:
(1) the terminological apparatus (language and language community, dialect and literary language, diglossia, idiolect and sociolect, bilingualism, plurilingualism, multilingualism, linguistic variables, etc.);
(2) the core areas (language policy and planning, languages in contact, genre theory, variability linguistics, ethnography of language, discourse analysis, conversation analysis, etc.); and
(3) sociolinguistic research methodology and techniques (guided interviews, questionnaires, participant observation, recording and transcription of spontaneous speech, etc.).
The basic research areas of Slovene sociolinguistics (language policy and planning, languages in contact, genre theory) will be presented and evaluated in the context of the development of the discipline.

Intended learning outcomes

Students learn the basic concepts of sociolinguistics. They are able to design, conduct and evaluate simple sociolinguistic research (e.g. attitudinal survey, ob-servation of speech behaviour, analysis of recorded linguistic material).

Assessment

Homework, two colloquia during the year, a research paper presented in a seminar. Suc-cessful completion of the colloquia and the seminar paper are prerequisites for admission to the examination. 30% colloquium, 30% seminar paper, 40% oral examination.

Lecturer's references

Danila Zuljan Kumar is associate professor of linguistics at the School of Humanities of the University of Nova Gorica and a research associate at ZRC SAZU's Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language. Her research topics include Slovene dialectology, sociolinguistics and geolinguistics. She is the co-author of Slovene Lin-guistic Atlases 1, 2, and 3, author of two and co-editor of several scientific monographs.
