Programme description
The program Language and literature in the digital world is intended for anyone interested in literature, linguistics, or culture. The emphasis of this program is on digital and interdisciplinary competences including established methods, foundational knowledge and competences in the areas included in the title of the program. Through practical training, the program deepens the applicability of acquired skills and knowledge and prepares students for work in both traditional as well as modern professional, research and teaching environments.
The program offers three course tracks:
• Slovene studies;
• Literature and culture;
• Slovene language and language data.
Course track Slovene studies
The track enables the acquisition of broad fundamental knowledge in the fields of Slovene studies, general linguistics and literary studies. Compulsory courses, in which students are introduced to basic knowledge in the fields of linguistics and literary sciences, are complemented by electives that offer deeper insight into different topics and expand the students’ interdisciplinary knowledge for further study or employment in the field.
Course track Literature and culture
The interdisciplinary track provides a foundation in literary studies, cultural studies, digital humanities as well as literary and cultural history. In addition to the competencies that enable students to understand literary and cultural phenomena, digital platforms, media and popular culture in Slovenian and international contexts, the course also provides practical skills ranging from knowledge of publishing practices and digital-visual creation to mastering the basic principles of critical and creative writing.
Course track Slovene language and language data
The track provides students with basic knowledge of linguistics, Slovenian and language in general. Theoretical knowledge of language and linguistics is complemented with technical knowledge and digital skills. The students are prepared for work with data and with Slovene language both to do research and professional service. This study track prepares students both for further study and for work in a world defined by multiculturalism and multilingualism.
Employment Opportunities
The Language and literature in the digital world study program is designed to equip students with knowledge and skills necessary for various careers in Slovene studies and humanities, and adds a special focus on the use of digital platforms and tools. Our goal is to prepare students for diverse career paths that combine traditional humanities with the demands of the modern digital world.
Graduates of the program can find employment in the following areas:
• editing and proofreading (structuring and revising spoken and written texts);
• language consulting;
• library sciences;
• documentation and archiving;
• publishing;
• journalism;
• editorial work;
• museum activities;
• cultural organizations;
• media;
• the arts.
A degree in Slovene studies prepares graduates for work in all of the aforementioned fields.
Graduates with a strong individual creative potential can also pursue careers in culture and the arts as self-employed professionals. They may contribute to various productions and projects requiring cultural heritage interpreters, screenwriters, editors, proofreaders, or establish themselves as writers or radio and television program creators. Some of these professions, such as critics and reviewers, are in high demand within the cultural sector.
Additionally, a degree in Literature and culture qualifies graduates for traditional roles in publishing, media (print, digital, radio, television), and public or private cultural institutions, e.g., libraries, museums, galleries, cinemas. Skills gained in this program are also valuable in journalism, marketing, content creation, and public relations.
A degree in Slovene language and language data prepares graduates for proofreading and language consulting, while their expertise in linguistic tools and digital environments makes them well-suited for careers in linguistic and data research, digital humanities, and interdisciplinary roles requiring data analysis and work in multicultural and multilingual settings.
