Objectives and competences

The aim of the course is to present sustainable industrial systems and their dimension within social system.
The problems and potential solutions to environmental pollution are shown in general and in specific cases of industrial processes. With a focus on technology as a source of problems, as well as possible solutions, the course gives an overview of the subject in a broad spectrum of industry technologies.
In the course, students develop the ability of a comprehensive and sustainable approach to the problem of reducing the negative impact of modern technologies on the environment.

Prerequisites

Fluency in Slovene or English language.

Content

The course focuses on the relationship between societal and technological systems within the biosphere, sustainable industrial systems, material and energy flow in industrial systems, economic ways of reducing negative impacts on environment, reducing pollution at its source point, reducing energy consumption, concepts and principles of clean technologies, certain cases of cleaner technologies, environmentally-friendly product design, sustainable development.

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:
Students will be able to systematically evaluate and understand the complexity of the connection of industrial and social systems into a single biosphere. They will understand the importance of harmonizing environmental, economic and social aspects of industrial processes development. Based on a systemic approach and presented examples of good practice, the students will be able to assess the weaknesses and approach to optimization of manufacturing processes and products throughout the life cycle.

Lecturer's references

Prof. dr. Henrik Gjerkeš. Habilitation field: Mechanical engineering.

Henrik Gjerkeš from Ljutomer graduated at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Maribor and received his master's degree and in 1999 PhD at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana. Since 2006, he has been employed at the University of Nova Gorica, where he is a lecturer in 6 courses at the School of Engineering and Management, the School of Environmental Sciences and the Graduate School, and a member of the Senate, the Scientific council and the Committee for academic affairs. In 2012, he was additionally employed at the Building and Civil Engineering Institute ZRMK, where he leads activities in the field of sustainable energy use and participates in numerous domestic and international projects - from strategic to completely concrete solutions to problems in industry and local communities. Between 2009 and 2011, he was a minister of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, responsible for local self-government, regional policy and the absorption of European funds. The basic field of work is mechanical engineering (heat transfer and process engineering), which he upgraded in his non-linear career path with knowledge of modern sustainable technologies, circularity, renewable energy sources, waste management, industrial ecology and regional politics. He is the mentor of 20 completed master's and 8 diploma theses. His bibliography comprises 243 items, of which 24 are scientific articles with 128 net citations and an h-index of 8 (WoS/Scopus, COBISS, September 2024).
