Environmental Management
Bachelor's programme in Environment (first cycle)
Objectives and competences
The primary goals of this course are: to give students the information on the factors, the concepts and the methods of land use planning and management tools, to inform students about the basic aspects of environmental policies and resource management policies within sectors, as well as to inform students on legislative and administrative mechanisms for environmental management on European Union as well as state level. The main objective is to prepare students for the activities within municipal as well as state and EU administration in the field of environment, agriculture, nature conservation, spatial planning, and project and technology evaluation. Student develops abilities to participate in preparing and elaboration of spatial as well as management plans for a specific region or an investment.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of natural sciences, mathematics, nature conservation, and informatics is required. Basic knowledge in social sciences and philosophy is also very much expected, as well as general knowledge and the ability of critical attitude towards any subject, and especially the understanding of actual problems of the society and society-environment relationships.

• Methods of environmental problem solving: conservation, planning , management
• Conservation of environmental qualities by the use of norms and standards - standardisation
• Optimisation methods – planning and assessment of activities in accordance with the conservation requirements
• Vulnerability studies, comparative studies, assessment of real needs, strategic environmental impact assessments
• Resource management - institutionalisation of conservation requirements, intrinsic values, spatial reserves
• Agriculture
• Forestry
• Water management and management of mineral resources

• Environmental remediation and mitigation
• Public participation and public deliberation

Assessment
During the course students defend the evaluation land use models they have prepared as a part of the studio project. The project has to be prepared in written form and defended orally in the form of an open discussion (50 %); a final examination (written or/and oral) is also required (50 %).
