Production of Educational Materials

Objectives and competences

The aim of this course is to explore with students open and digital pedagogical practices, tools and technologies in the context of development of effective open education materials that would fit learners' needs and requirements and create stimulating learning experiences.

Students will acquire the following competencies:

  • Criticality: Develop an understanding of basic pedagogical concepts relating to the creation of open educational materials.

-Creativity: Become familar with specific digital tools and technologies and explore their use for the creation of effective educational materials;

  • Design: Create effective open educational materials by using selected digital tools and technologies;

  • Problem solving: Select the most appropriate tools and digital technologies to address specific challenges of open learning.

Prerequisites

Students should have the basic understanding of the concepts, stategies and didactical models of open education. They should be familiar with the basic tools and technologies that can be used in the process of creation learning experiences including learning resources, communication, collaborative work, assesment and analytics and should be prepared to work in interdisciplinary teams.

Content

During the course students will be learning about the basics of the open education material development. During the sessions students will explore the theoretical background of methods being used in OE and OL, models, strategies, tools and approaches.

They will be exploring in detail tools and ap-proaches for creation of educational resources, collaborative work and learning, communica-tion, assessment and learning management.

They will explore in detail various tools to han-dle different modalities from texts, sound to videos, interactive materials and complete courses like Massive Open Online Courses and other open courses. Special attention will be given to tools and mechanisms to manage complete learning systems and provide person-alised learning experiences.

There will be emphasis on hands-on practice, so as to combine deep knowledge about essen-tial topics on the instructional design with de-veloping actual skills of using them. The follow-ing topics will be explored (use, creation):

1) Participatory practices
2) Multimedia social media technologies for collaboration
3) Blogs and websites
4) Visuals
5) Podcasting: Using/Recording
6) Video and Screen capture
7) Live web conferencing
8) Open data

Intended learning outcomes

After completing this course, students will:

Critically discuss the landscape of open education, digital pedagogical practices, technologies and tools in the context of production of educational materials

• Critically analyse and select the most appropriate digital technologies and tools for OE and OL for use in own professional context

• Use and critically reflect on the use of a range of digital pedagogies, technologies and tools to create quality open education materials
