On 4 December 2017, the first Large Size Telescope (LST), under construction at Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma, Spain, reached an important milestone when its 18-ton mirror dish, mostly made of reinforced carbon fiber tubes, was lifted to the lower structure successfully.

After careful preparation, the dish was lifted 18 meters above the ground and secured using a 200-ton crane. The whole operation only took four hours. A big congratulations to the team for bringing the telescope one step closer to operation! More about the LST and the prototype’s live webcam:

The site in La Palma will host the Northern site of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) Observatory, the advanced world-wide instrument for the studies of cosmic very-high energy gamma radiation. The Southern CTA site will be hosted near Paranal in Chile. The University of Nova Gorica is a member of CTA consortium and is contributing as well to the research and development of the new camera designs for LST using silicon photomultipliers.
