University of Nova Gorica invites to the lecture: "The World Health Organization START Study: Background, rationale and development in light of the Slovene participation" by Prof. Dr. Diego De Leo (Director of the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention at the Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia and Slovene Center for Suicide Research, UP IAM).

Lecture will take place on Friday, 20 December 2013 at 7 p.m. at the Lanthieri mansion in Vipava.

Lecture will be in English.

Suicide attempt is one of the most important risk factors for suicide. It is estimated that there are 10 to 20 serious suicide attempts for each completed suicide. The characteristics of suicide attempters are very diverse, however a high level of distress is behind each suicidal attempt. We estimate at least 10.000 suicide attempts in Slovenia per year. The aims of WHO/START project are to record epidemiological data and characteristics about suicide attempts, to study the differences in the circumstances and seriousness of suicide attempts, and to determine the effectiveness of the brief intervention in comparison to the existing treatment after a suicide attempt. The experiences of four different components of the study will be presented and the experiences of the implementation in 26 countries will be discussed. Special attention will be given to the challenges for the implementation of the study in Slovenia.
