GoChile Summer School of Astronomy

The School of Science of the University of Nova Gorica organises the 4th GoChile Summer School of Astronomy, which will take place in Dijaški dom Ajdovščina (Slovenia). The application deadline is April 20th, 2025.

The main projects will be carried out with the remotely operated GoChile telescope*. In groups of 2 students you will plan, carry out and present an astronomical research project with the help of a mentor. You will listen to lectures given by professional astronomers and expand your theoretical knowledge on topics such as the use of artificial intelligence in astronomy, stellar evolution, black holes and cosmic rays. In the evenings, you will sharpen your practical skills with smaller telescopes on the site of the school.

The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 16. If there are more applications, the selection will be made on the basis of a motivation text (part of the application form). The participants will be informed of the selection results no later than one week after the application deadline.

The programme of the summer school will take into account the participants' prior experience in astronomy, beginners are welcome. This year the summer school will have an international participation. Basic knowledge of English is required.

The summer school (programme, accommodation, meals) is free of charge for the participants. The participants must arrange their own transport to and from Ajdovščina.

*GoChile is an educational and non-profit project of the University of Nova Gorica and the Spika astronomical magazine Two remotely controlled telescopes, 76 mm and 400 mm, are located at the El Sauce observatory in Chile. The telescopes are used by physics and astrophysics students of the School of Science of the University of Nova Gorica, high school students, and amateur astronomers.

The summer school is organised by the School of Science of the University of Nova Gorica with the help of Zavod Cosmolab. The students will be guided through the projects by: Assist. Prof. Jure Japelj, Prof. Andreja Gomboc, Assist. Prof. Tanja Petrushevska, Andrej Guštin, Eduardo Concepcion Castro and Amalija Rafaj Škriljevečki.
