Joining the European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR) programme has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my academic journey. What makes this programme truly unique is its strong international focus and the opportunity to study migration from multiple perspectives—historical, political, and cultural—while living and learning across several countries.
During my semester in Slovenia, I was introduced to new ways of thinking about migration and population dynamics. The course on Migration and Small Nations challenged me to look beyond statistics and understand how migration interacts with broader social processes like ageing, fertility, and mortality. It was a thought-provoking course that contributed meaningfully to my understanding of migration as a field.
Living in Slovenia was also a wonderful experience. It is an incredibly student-friendly country—offering generous discounts at restaurants, affordable public transport, and easy access to some of the most beautiful destinations I’ve seen. Visiting the coastal town of Koper and the iconic Lake Bled were definite highlights. But what made the biggest impression on me was how genuinely kind and welcoming the people were, both in academic spaces and everyday life.
I would highly recommend EMMIR to anyone who is passionate about migration studies and looking for an interdisciplinary programme that values intercultural exchange. It’s a challenging, inspiring, and truly global experience.
