Melvin Hovland, student of the BSc study programme Viticulture and Enology
Hi, I’m Melvin! I am from Stockholm, Sweden, and am a third-year student of the bachelor’s programme in viticulture and enology at the University of Nova Gorica. My school is located in the picturesque small town of Vipava, in the centre of the Vipava Valley. Vipava is a gorgeous place with stunning nature just around the corner. Life here is calm and relaxed, and the town itself is full of friendly people. Vipava is a historical town, and even the university building is an old castle oozing with history. And if you do miss the bustling city, Ljubljana is less than an hour away.
I am incredibly passionate about wine, and so is the University of Nova Gorica. The theory taught is relevant and based on the latest research, some of that research even conducted in the very building it is taught. Classes are often small, and the students usually know each other well, even across different school. The professors are open to assist you with any questions you may have, leading to an atmosphere where deeper learning is encouraged. Regular lectures are complemented by guest lecturers from all over the world, bringing new perspectives and knowledge. Throughout years 2 and 3, we hone our practical skills in the university vineyard and in various internships with winemakers or other companies related to wine. We students are welcome to participate in various research projects which gives a valuable insight into the current developments in viticulture and winemaking.
Studying at University of Nova Gorica is a unique experience, it prepares you in your field of study – and your life.
