Terms and Conditions of Enrolment

The University of Nova Gorica Senate approved following two study regulations for all doctoral study programs to stimulate students to achieve better performance in their studies:

  1. The student wishing to proceed to the defence of the dissertation is required to provide one scientific article in the field of his/her research performed as part of his/her doctoral studies.

Doctoral study programme Environmental Sciences

The study is organized in four years with 240 ECTS. Each year is evaluated with 60 ECTS.

In the first year, the student must have completed the following study requirements: Trends in Environmental Sciences (30 ECTS) and Research work I (30 ECTS). Student has to submit an application to approve the topic of the argumentation.

The condition for enrolling in the second year is completion of 60 ECTS credit points.

In the second year, the student must have completed the following study requirements: Research work II (30 ECTS) and General elective courses (30ECTS). Student has to submit an application to approve the topic of the dissertation.

The condition for enrolling in the third year is completion of 120 ECTS.

In the third year, the student focuses exclusively on Research work 3 (60 ECTS).

The condition for enrolling in the fourth year is completion of requirements of all three years (180 ECTS).

In the fourth year, the student focuses exclusively on Research work IV (30 ECTS), which results in a successful defence of the Doctoral dissertation (30 ECTS).

Doctoral degree students must complete lectures, practicals, individual research work and public presentation, argumentation and defence of doctoral dissertation and successful defence of the Doctoral dissertation (30 ECTS), for which a student receives 240 ECTS.

The time foreseen for preparation of the doctoral dissertation is five years after the enrolment into the study programme.

Doctoral study programme Humanities

The study is organized in four years with 240 ECTS. Each year is evaluated with 60 ECTS.

Once enrolled, the student chooses a supervisor in a relevant field and selects course units for a total of 18 ECTS (6 ECTS of required courses and 12 ECTS of elective course units); this selection must be approved by the supervisor. These courses can be also selected from other institutions’ programs.

In the first year, in agreement with the supervisor, the student prepares an extensive term paper related to his or her doctoral dissertation, consisting of a relevant literature review and presentation of the state of the art in the field. The presentation and defense of the assignment must be completed in the first year. Presentation of this assignment and at least 75% participation in a research seminar is worth 26 ECTS, and an additional 16 ECTS may be acquired by conducting research defined in agreement with the supervisor at the beginning of the year. Before proceeding to second year, the student must:

  • Pass an exam in a required course unit
  • Fulfil research seminar requirements a (term paper and 75% course participation)
  • Conduct independent research

In order to enter the second year, the student must have earned at least 48 of 60 ECTS. Before proceeding to the third year, the student must:

  • Pass all first- and second-year exams
  • Satisfy research seminar requirements (75% participation)
  • Conduct independent research

In order to enter the third year, the student must have 120 ECTS. Once in the third year, the student is required to do research leading to a dissertation.

Doctoral degree students must complete lectures, practicals, individual research work and public presentation, argumentation and defence of doctoral dissertation and successful defence of the doctoral dissertation (30 ECTS), for which a student receives 240 ECTS.

The time foreseen for preparation of the doctoral dissertation is five years after the enrolment into the study programme.

Doctoral study programme Karstology

The study is organized in four years with 240 ECTS. Each year is evaluated with 60 ECTS.

Upon enrolment, student chooses a mentor in the specific scientific field. Student enrol in courses for 60 ECTS, of which 42 ECTS are from required courses and 18 ECTS are elective courses approved by the mentor. The student can take 2/3 of elective courses (12 ECTS) at foreign institutions. In the first year, the student has to write a seminar paper in cooperation with the mentor. The paper is related to student’s research topic and includes an overview of bibliography, and presentation of global research on the topic. A successful presentation of the seminar paper brings the student 6 ECTS, while 24 ECTS are obtained as a result of the successfully completed research work, which is defined together with the mentor at the beginning of the study year.

Before enrolling in the second year, the student must have completed the following study requirements:

  • examinations in required courses (12 ECTS),
  • obligations from the research seminar (successful preparation of seminar paper) (6 ECTS),
  • independent research work (24 ECTS).

The condition for enrolling in the second year is to have accumulated at least 42 ECTS of the total 60 ECTS.

Before enrolling in the third year, the student must have completed the following study requirements:

  • all elective courses from the first (18 ECTS) and second year (18 ECTS),
  • obligations from the research seminar (6 ECTS),
  • independent research work (36 ECTS).

The condition for enrolling in the third year is completion of 120 ECTS.

In the third year, the student focuses exclusively on Research work III (30 ECTS).

The condition for enrolling in the fourth year is completion of requirements of all three years (180 ECTS).

In the fourth year, the student focuses exclusively on Research work IV (30 ECTS), which results in a successful defence of the Doctoral dissertation (30 ECTS).

Doctoral study programme Physics

The study is organized in four years with 240 ECTS. Each year is evaluated with 60 ECTS.

In order to proceed to the second year of study, students must obtain at least 60 ECTS.

In the second year the student submits the application for approval of dissertation topic.

To enrol into the third year of the Physics doctoral study programme, students must fulfil all first-year requirements as well as obtain 60 ECTS from the second year of study.

The condition for enrolling in the third year is completion of 120 ECTS.

In the third year, the student focuses exclusively on Research work III (60 ECTS).

The condition for enrolling in the fourth year is completion of requirements of all three years (180 ECTS).

In the fourth year, the student focuses exclusively on Research work IV (30 ECTS credit points), which results in a successful defence of the Doctoral dissertation (30 ECTS).

Condition for completing the study program:
Students must successfully pass all exams and all obligations in relation to all subjects fulfilled according to the curriculum, and successfully defence of the Doctoral dissertation, for which the student collects 240 ECTS.

The time foreseen for preparation of the Doctoral dissertation is five years after the enrolment into the study programme.

Doctoral study programme Materials

The study is organized in four years with 240 ECTS. Each year is evaluated with 60 ECTS.

In order to proceed to the second year of study of the doctoral study programme Materials, students must obtain at least 48 credit points in the first year.

The student submits the application for approval of dissertation topic in the second year of study. The application is considered and approved by the UNG Senate, which determines a three-member commission for the assessment of the dissertation and appoints one or two mentors. To enrol into the third year, students must fulfil all first-year requirements as well as obtain 60 ECTS from the second year of study, i.e. the condition for enrolling in the third year is completion of 120 ECTS. In the third year, the student focuses exclusively on Research work III (60 ECTS).

The condition for enrolling in the fourth year is the completion of the requirements of all three years (180 ECTS). In the fourth year, students focus exclusively on Research work IV (30 ECTS) and preparation of the dissertation, which results in a defence of the Doctoral dissertation (30 ECTS).

Condition for completing the study program:
Students must successfully pass all exams and all obligations in relation to all subjects fulfilled according to the curriculum, and successfully defence of the Doctoral dissertation, for which the student collects 240 ECTS.

The time foreseen for preparation of the Doctoral dissertation is five years after the enrolment into the study programme.

Doctoral study programme Cultural Heritage Studies

The study is organized in four years with 240 ECTS. Each year is evaluated with 60 ECTS.

Before enrolling in the second year, the student must have completed at least 70% of study commitments from first year.

Before enrolling in the third year, the student must have completed the following study requirements:

  • all courses from the first year (60 ECTS),
  • all courses from second year (60 ECTS).

The condition for enrolling in the third year is completion of 120 ECTS.

In the third year, the student focuses exclusively on Research work III (30 ECTS).

The condition for enrolling in the fourth year is completion of requirements of all three years (180 ECTS).

In the fourth year, the student focuses exclusively on Research work IV (30 ECTS credit points), which results in a successful defence of the Doctoral dissertation (30 ECTS).

Doctoral study programme Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology

The study is organized in four years with 240 ECTS. Each year is evaluated with 60 ECTS.

In order to proceed to the second year of study, students must obtain at least 50 ECTS. To enrol into the third year of the Molecular genetics and biotechnology doctoral study programme, students must fulfil all first-year requirements as well as obtain 50 ECTS from the second year of study.

The condition for enrolling in the fourth year is completion of requirements of all three years (180 ECTS).

Doctoral degree students must complete lectures, practicals, individual research work and public presentation, argumentation and defence of doctoral dissertation and successful defence of the Doctoral dissertation (30 ECTS), for which a student receives 240 ECTS.

Doctoral study programme Cognitive science of language

The study is organized in four years with 240 ECTS. Each year is evaluated with 60 ECTS.

In order to proceed to the second year of study, students must obtain at least 50 ECTS.

To enrol into the third year of the Molecular genetics and biotechnology doctoral study programme, students must fulfil all first-year requirements as well as obtain 50 ECTS from the second year of study.

To enrol into the fourth year of the Molecular genetics and biotechnology doctoral study programme, students must fulfil all requirements and obtain 180 ECTS from the first, second and third year of study.

Doctoral degree students must complete lectures, practicals, individual research work and public presentation, argumentation and defence of doctoral dissertation and successful defence of the doctoral dissertation (30 ECTS), for which a student receives 240 ECTS.

The time foreseen for preparation of the doctoral dissertation is five years after the enrolment into the study programme.
