Objectives and competences

Students get aquinted with the categories of sex and gender in the age of modernity, they are sensibilised about the gender and discriminatory practices in the society.
The student will be able to use the category of gender as an analytical category.

Content

Gender as an analytical category at the intersection of cultural history and literary science.
Brief overview of the history of gender.
Changes in the position of women and men in the society of the 19th century.
The rise of the »woman's question«.
Crisis of gender identities – new images of femininity and masculinity.
The figure of the new woman and feminine man in the public and in the literary discourse.
Slovenian women's movement (historical overview, persons, societies, magazines).
Female professions in the age of modernity (workers, teaches, post office employees ...).
Economical migrations and gender in the age of modernity.
Female discoveries of new places and spaces – travelogues and relationship to the urban spaces.
Public discourses on female education, marriage and sexuality.
Representations of gender in literary texts of modernity.

Intended learning outcomes

After sucessfuly passed exam the students will
aquire knowledge from the field of gender studies;
understand how the category of gender is constructed in the field of history and literary science;
be able to analyse gender in different social, historical and cultural contexts;
develop the competence of recognising the effects of gender discrimination and evaluate it in cultural patterns of modernity and in present time.

Assessment

Active participation at lectures and seminars (90 % attendance); written assignment (15.000 signs) and oral presentation.
