Basics of information and communication technologies

Objectives and competences

The main objective of the course is to make the students familiar with the basic knowledge of information and communication technologies (ICT). Students will be able to independently use information technology tools during the course of the study and, subsequently for searching information and preparing reports, project assignments, presentations, and other materials. The objective is also to present trends in ICT and to prepare students to follow them.

Prerequisites

Basic computer and internet knowledge.

Content

• Basic knowledge of information and communication technologies (ICT):
◦ History and use of computers
◦ Computer structure and operation
◦ Computer hardware
◦ Information technology tools
◦ Computer networks and internet
◦ Introduction to programming
◦ Trends in ICT
◦ Cloud computing
• Use of information technology tools

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the students will be able to understand and use:
• computers and its components,
• essential ICT concepts
• input and output devices

Assessment

Successfully performed written exam, homework and individual case studies with oral presentation. Positive grade in the case studies work is required for admittance to a written exam. Individual case studies work with discussion is required to evaluate the ability of using computational tools for written and oral presentation of selected ICT topics. Written exam assesses the knowledge of the fundamental concepts of information and communication technologies and the understanding of structure and operation of computers and computer networks. 20% individual case studies 20% homeworks 60% written exam
