University of Nova Gorica participates in the Flux 4.0 project: The next generation of data-supported sustainable tourism
The University of Nova Gorica is a partner in the Flux 4.0 project – Managing Flows for Sustainable Tourism, which is one of the most extensive research and development programs in the field of digitalization, artificial intelligence, and sustainable tourism management in Slovenia.
The project is led by Arctur d.o.o., with eleven additional partners from industry and the research sector participating. Over the next three years, they will develop advanced data models, artificial intelligence, digital twins of destinations, geoinformation systems, and innovative approaches for reducing tourism's environmental footprint and strengthening the resilience of destinations.
The goal of the project is to establish a comprehensive data ecosystem that will enable a better understanding of tourist flows, forecasting of visits, more efficient destination management, and decision-making support at the local, regional, and national levels. Special emphasis will be placed on sustainable development, crisis management, the circular economy, and the use of artificial intelligence to improve the tourist experience.
The key outcome of the project will be the development of the Flux 4.0 platform and a prototype digital twin of tourism, which will combine real-time data and enable simulations, forecasts, and decision-making support for various stakeholders in the Slovenian tourism ecosystem.
"Eight years ago we launched the first Tourism 4.0 project under the TRL 3–6 programs, which significantly changed the understanding of the role of data in tourism and spurred the development of numerous new projects and initiatives. This time too, we have joined forces with all the leading Slovenian universities and top companies. I believe that Flux 4.0 will make an important contribution to the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence, and will help create a more sustainable, resilient, and data-supported tourism of the future," said Assist. Prof. Dr. Urška Starc Pečeny, Director of Innovation and Head of the Tourism Department at Arctur, at the launch of the project.
By combining research excellence, technological expertise, and the practical needs of the tourism sector, Flux 4.0 aims to lay the foundations for a new generation of solutions that will help destinations meet the challenges of the future.

The project is being carried out under the Public Call for Promoting the Implementation of Research and Development Programs (TRL 3–6) and brings together research and development expertise with the aim of developing advanced solutions for the future of Slovenian tourism.
At the University of Nova Gorica, the project is led by Prof. Dr. Griša Močnik, head of the Center for Atmospheric Research and lecturer at the School of Environmental Sciences. The University of Nova Gorica is responsible, among other things, for environmental monitoring and linking tourism data with environmental data.
