The University of Nova Gorica has a vacancy for the position of post-doctoral researcher at the rank of assistant with Phd or assistant professor in experimental syntax.

We are looking for candidates interested in pursuing a rewarding research and academic career at the University of Nova Gorica. We offer a dynamic research environment supported by state-of-the-art research equipment and a pronounced international orientation.

The work will be conducted in the Center for Cognitve Science of Language. The successful candidate will play a key role in designing and conducting large-scale sentence acceptability experiments involving speakers of Slavic languages at large as well as analysis of their results and preparation of publishable reports. S/he will join the research group working on a Slovenian Research Agency-funded project investigating the limits of word order variability in free word order languages led by prof. dr. Artur Stepanov. The candidate may also be asked to take over moderate teaching and administrative obligations in the university's linguistics programs.

The successful candidate will be employed on a full-time basis for a fixed term of one year (pending budgetary approval, there may be a possibility to renew for a second year). The expected start date is December 12th, 2022 (earlier start is also possible).

If the candidate submits evidence of holding a valid title of assistant professor, employment at this rank will be considered.

To be considered for the position, candidates should have:

  • a PhD in Slavic or General Linguistics and specialization in syntactic theory, comparative syntax or experimental syntax,
  • a strong background in the syntax of Slavic languages,
  • familiarity with experimental methods of large-scale sentence data collection using both online participant recruitment platforms and the traditional (offline) data collection modality,
  • ability to recruit larger groups of speakers of Slavic languages for online and offline sentence acceptability experiments,
  • fluent command of one or more Slavic language (C1 or C2), preferably from the South Slavic family, and English,
  • ability to work both independently and as part of a project team,
  • excellent communication skills.

The following will be considered advantages:

  • a strong publication record in Slavic (experimental) syntax, in particular as concerns the South Slavic languages,
  • experience using modern online participant recruitment and behavioral experimentation platforms,
  • knowledge of up-to-date statistical methods of data analysis, including mixed effects models and clustering techniques,
  • knowledge of and/or experience in behavioral psycholinguistic (self-paced reading, eye-tracking) and neurolinguistic (EEG/ERP) experimental methodologies,
  • knowledge of Slovenian at the B2 level.
